기업의 ESG 수준과 재무성과 및 기업가치와의 관계 : 산업별 효과를 중심으로
본 연구는 기업의 ESG 수준이 단기적 재무성과 및 장기적 기업가치에 미치는 영향에 대해 분석한다. 이 연구에서 우리는 기업의 ESG 투자 효과가 기업이 속한 산업의 특성에 따라 다르게 나타날 수 있다는 점에 특히 주목하며, ESG 중 특정 세부항목의 중요도가 상대적으로 더 높은 산업과 그렇지 않은 산업 사이에는 ESG 수준이 재무성과 및 기업가치 에 미치는 효과가 다르게 나타날 수 있다는 가설을 검증한다. 2011년부터 2019년 사이 기간 동안의 국내 기업 데이터를 이용하여 분석한 결과, ESG의 각 세부항목이 재무성과와 기업가치에 미치는 영향의 크기는 해당 항목의 중요도가 높은 산업에서 더 강하게 나타났 다. ESG 세부항목 중요도가 높은 산업에서 기업이 적극적인 ESG 투자를 통해 높은 ESG 수준을 달성할 때 단기적인 재무성과는 부정적인 영향을, 장기적인 기업가치는 긍정적인 영향을 받는다. 또한 ESG 각 세부항목의 등급점수와 기업의 매출원가, 판관비, 광고비 지출 간에는 대체로 양(+)의 관계가 존재한다. 우리의 결과는 ESG에 대한 초기 투자가 단기적으로 비용의 증가로 인해 기업의 성과에 부정적인 영향을 주나, 해당 산업에 특히 요구되는 ESG 부문에 대한 적절한 투자가 장기적으로는 기업의 가치를 제고시킬 수 있다는 설명을 지지한다.
Industry Effects of the Relationship between ESG Performance and Firm Value
This paper analyzes the effect of a firm’s ESG performance on financial performance and firm value. In this study, we hypothesize that the effect of ESG performance on firm value can vary across industries, depending on relative importance of each subcomponent of ESG, and test the hypothesis. The results of our analyses using Korean data from 2011 to 2019 show that the magnitude of the effect of ESG performance on financial performance and firm value is larger in industries where the ESG subcomponent is considered essential than in other industries. When a firm in an industry where ESG really matters achieves a high ESG level through active ESG investment, the firm‘s short-term financial performance is negatively affected yet the long-term firm value is positively affected. We find a positive relationship between the level of ESG subcompent and the firm’s cost of sales, SG&A expenses, and advertising expenses. Our results suggest that ESG investment could hurt a firm‘s financial performance in the beginning due to increase in costs but can enhance firm value in the long run.
